Bottom Paint

Three types of anti-fouling bottom paint are regularly used by recreational boaters.  What is the right one for you?

HARD antifouling:
the best protection in all waters; the smoothest and hardest finish for high
performance boats; if taken out of the water, the boat must be repainted before re-launch.

ABLATIVE antifouling: multi-season protection; launch and re-launch without repainting; and, minimal
maintenance in terms of sanding or scraping away old bottom paint.

Antifouling with Teflon: generally an extremely hard finish that is easily cleaned; and, an exceptionally
smooth low friction surface that minimizes drag.

How much antifouling paint is needed?  The following chart provides a quick estimate:

       Sail      Power
 Waterline length
 20 25
 30  35  40  20  25  30  35  40
 Amt of paint (qts)
 3  4  5.5  7  9  3  4  6  8  10

A better estimate can be made by multiplying the LOA by the beam and then by 0.85 to get the hull area.  Then divide the hull area by the coverage of the paint as provided by the paint manufacturer to determine how much paint will be needed.

Application advice:

Carefully inspect hull for any areas of loose paint as well as any areas of gelcoat damage.  Repair as
     necessary before proceeding with painting.

Brush application - a larger width brush is best.

Roller application - a good quality solvent resistant roller with a 3/8" nap is best.

The correct thickness as specified by the paint manufacturer usually requires two coats.

Add an extra coat to leading and trailing edges. waterline, trim tabs, out-drives, keel and rudder.

Follow carefully the paint manufacturer's recommendations regarding use of thinner in antifouling paint.
